I see by the headlines that once again, a kiss-in was staged on the property of the LDS Church in Salt Lake.
I want to be clear on two things.
One, I am not Mormon, and probably never will be.
Two, I am not of the mindset that homosexuals are sick, deviant, or dammed. I've known many gay people in my life, and while there have been some that I would not trust with a burnt match, I have known many that were decent, thoughtful, caring people. In short, no different than any other demographic with which I have come into contact.
However, these "kiss-ins" are appalling and ridiculous.
I am certain that two people, no matter what their orientation, would not be allowed to play tongue hockey outside at Temple Square, in the Conference Center or in the Tabernacle.
Why? It's bad manners. And it's tacky. You don't swap spit in church, or on church grounds. Any church. Be it a synagogue, a mosque, or an Episcopalian, Unitarian, Methodist, Baptists, Baha'i or Zoroastrian Church. Church is simply not the place people should go to grope one another. That's why Henry Ford invented back seats.
When the voters of California voted no on the idea of gay marriage, there were marches, and protests. In short, a segment of the gay community threw a temper tantrum. And the leadership of the gay community said nothing. Which implies either tacit approval or a lack of the aforementioned leadership.
To add to that was the scene of gay protesters harassing an elderly woman handing out tracts against homosexuality. What a great look.
And furthermore, someone, somewhere began publishing addresses of those people who had donated money to defeat gay marriage on the California ballot. The message: We know who you are and we know where to find you.
And now we have these tawdry displays on LDS Church property.
And the stunts send the message that the Gay Community is incapable of making its case logically and rationally. Rather than cite the number of artists, authors, researchers and achievers of the gay community, they see how many Mormons they can shock. Rather than refer to the growing evidence that homosexuality is not a choice, but rather a biological condition just as is heterosexuality, these people flaunt the fact that they hold others in contempt. And do so by making a mockery of themselves in public. They are in fact daring someone to call them sinners by pushing the envelope. And it sends the message that they have no control over themselves, and will act on impulse and passion.
And that Gentle Reader, will probably not change any minds. Acting like a rutting elk seldom does.
So their attempt to shock the public will most likely succeed, but it will not gain the gay community any credibility. It will fan the fires of their detractors, and will leave people with the opinion that gay people have no control over their libidos, and while demanding respect, are incapable of showing any. And are incapable of basic human decency.
"Accept our demands, or suffer the consequences, as any viewpoint but ours is wrong."
Which is of course the backbone of liberal thought. As a former Lib, I happen to know this firsthand.
Which makes me feel sorry for the many gay people I have met who have struggled against the stereotypes. Their job just keeps getting harder and harder.
